High Density

Radiation Shielding - Weights and Counterbalances - Boring Bars – Crankshafts - Ordnance

What are tungsten alloys used for?

  • Medical applications for shielding & collimators
  • Counterbalance weights
  • Vibration dampening
  • Gyroscopes
  • Ballistics
  • Darts

High DensityBecause of the physical properties of Hogen Industries' high density metal, it is often used as both a weight and a structural member.

Radiation Shielding

Our tungsten alloys are used for radioactive source containers, gamma radiography, shields, and source holders for oil-well, logging, and industrial instrumentation. You can use our alloys for collimators and shielding in cancer therapy machines, and as syringe protection for radioactive injections.

There is no licensing required for tungsten alloy materials. Tungsten alloys are stable at high temperatures. You can use one-third less material than lead for the same energy-absorbing effectiveness.

You can use our high density tungsten alloys wherever radioactivity has to be controlled and directed.

Weights and Counterbalances

Hogen Industries' tungsten alloys are used for

  • Aircraft control surfaces and rotor blades
  • Guidance platforms
  • Balancing of fly wheels and turbines
  • Vibration dampening governors
  • Fuse masses
  • Weights for self-winding watches

Our high density tungsten alloy is often used as both a weight and structural member because of its physical properties.

Boring Bars and Grinding Quills

Chatter Free™ and Super Chatter Free™ are the standards for vibration-free machining and grinding. They're used when rigidity and minimal vibration are crucial. Chatter Free means heavier cuts, longer tool life, and better finish. Tool extensions of up to 9:1 are possible, depending on the diameter. Tools run cooler because of the high thermal conductivity, and you can braze directly to material without affecting its physical properties.

Tool ApplicationsThese materials are often used in place of tungsten carbide boring bars because they have a higher density, are readily machinable, less prone to chipping and breakage, and both material and finishing costs are less. Crankshaft Balancing

Tungsten is used extensively to balance crankshafts in high-performance engines. Individual weights are stocked. See our weight chart for formulas and information to solve balancing problems.

Rotating Inertia Members

Use our metal for gyro rotors, fly wheels, and rotating members for governors. Because of its unique physical properties, tungsten lends itself to excellent rotating inertia members.

Ordnance Components

Hyper-velocity armor-penetrating applications use our materials in spheres, cubes, and projectile shapes. Manufacturing techniques and additives allow us to vary properties such as elongation, ultimate tensile strength, and hardness to meet your needs.

High Temperature Tooling

High TemperatureDiemitech™ is our special tungsten alloy used for die casting, extrusion dies, hot upsetting, and electro brazing.  It's a tungsten, molybdenum, nickel, iron-based material. Diemitech has good thermal conductivity and maintains excellent physical properties at high working temperatures. It resists erosion and scaling, minimizes soldering and heat checking, and basically eliminates the need for heat treatment. Click on Diemitech for further information.
